Dear Friend of CFC,
How does one make a difference for the future?
Murray Bowen’s deep belief in the future fueled his pursuit of knowledge toward a science of human behavior, a goal that many of his contemporaries considered impossible. The result of his life’s work, Bowen Family Systems Theory, has opened a way “for man to think scientifically about himself” and laid a foundation for generations to follow in adding to the depth of our understanding of human systems.
Bowen theory is rigorous and scientific, but not ivory tower. What people find compelling in this way of thinking is its relevance to life. People who know this theory also know the remarkable difference it makes in their lives. A systems perspective opens the mind to seeing new options for solutions and change. Knowledge of the emotional system and differentiation of self that came out of research with families has enormous application to larger human systems: community, church, organizations, business, society, and even into the arena of international relations.
The Center for Family Consultation, founded in 1977, is home to people who come together from a variety of fields to study Bowen theory and apply it to their work. Year by year, we have enlarged the opportunities for learning through
• the Post-graduate Training Program in Family Systems Theory and Therapy • four annual conferences, including the Midwest Symposium with guest scientists • research seminars • consultation groups, and • programs open to the community at low cost.
Through our website and email, we are reaching a wider audience with information and resources for learning Bowen theory.
In order to continue and expand our mission, we now seek your help. We have established a Future Fund, with a first-year goal of $20,000. With your help, we can do more: offer the fees needed to bring guest scientists to conferences; expand our technical facility; offer scholarships; fund research projects; and most important, engage a growing number of young scholars, clinicians, and leaders in the study and application of this important body of knowledge.
Thank you for your interest and support of the Center for Family Consultation.
